In Catcher in the Rye, when Salinger says, "All that David Copperfield kind of crap," he is referring to the back story of Holden; all the details such as where he came from and who he was in the past and whatnot.
Salinger is much more about the current state of his characters, while Dickens focuses more in on how they developed in the past, what got them to where they are. Salinger is trying to make the statement that it doesn't matter what happened in Holden's past, but rather where he was going to take his future.
