Hamlet Act III Scene i, ii, iii and iv

-Characters: Queen Gertrude, Guildenstern, Roesencrantz, King Claudius, Polonius, Ophelia
-Devotions visage= outward show of devotion; by looking like they're doing the right thing, they can convince people they're doing good
-First time hearing of Claudius feeling guilty
-Hamlet's big "to be or not to be" soliloquy

-Hamlet is talking to Ophelia but also commenting on how he mistrusts her motives
-He knows beauty corrupts honestly more than the opposite (like his mother)
-"I did love you once" means he does not love her now
-Hamlet is upset with everyone, even himself
-He calls out Ophelia on being a worse dinner than he
-Hamlet is basically stating that women corrupt men
-He calls out Ophelia for being two-faced, commenting on how she covers her natural face with makeup
-Madness could either mean insanity, or implied anger
-Claudius feels Hamlet's talk was not really of love, nor madness
-He doesn't want any danger to come to Hamlet or himself so he decides to remove Hamlet from the picture
-Polonius disagrees with Claudius but tells him to do what he must, but only if he allows Hamlet some time with Gertrude after the play
-Polonius asks to listen in on their conversations and if Hamlet is a threat, send him away
Scene ii
-Hamlet is basically saying to the players to act naturally and not overdue it
-He then says not to underplay it but rather let them make a judgment call
-Also says not to go off of the script

-Claudius is praying because he's upset that his actions have caused him an inconvenience
-Claudius realizes how much of a threat hamlet is and that he needs to get rid of him
-Hamlet doesn't just want to kill Claudius, he wants to send him to hell
-This is why Hamlet doesn't kill Claudius as he's praying
-The ghost wanted Gertrude to feel pain as well but without death and not at the hand of Hamlet
-For Gertrude, letting her sit and think is enough punishment
-Hamlet talks down on his mother and wants her to see who she really is
-Polonius thinks that he's doing the right thing by intervening in their conversation and Hamlet stabs him
-Gertrude was already panicked, now Hamlet had become more mad
-Hamlet proceeds to verbally stab his mother with his harsh words; says she's heartless
-Polonius and his words are now out of the picture and Hamlet is seen as more of a character of action and integrity
-Now that Hamlet has killed he is ready to kill Claudius as well
-The ghost shows up and reminds Hamlet of his purpose, saying that he has already done too much
-He encourages Hamlet to have integrity and make sure Gertrude is still on his side
